The Value of a Good Match
This event offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students and employers to find their perfect fit. When a connection is made, employers have the chance to share their desired technologies and outcomes with the students. This valuable insight allows students to tailor their final projects accordingly.
For instance, if a student connects with Foodee, they may hear something like, “Ember.js is integral to our work. We would be thrilled if you could showcase your abilities in Ember.js for your final project.” This invaluable information gives students a significant advantage when it comes to securing a job upon completing their studies.
The Success of the First Event
Our inaugural Employer Speed Dating night, held on October 6th, was a resounding success! Representatives from more than 10 companies, including Hootsuite, MEC, and Telus, participated in the event. Students had the chance to rotate between employers, engaging in brief five-minute conversations. The atmosphere was reminiscent of speed dating, as you could observe which groups were truly hitting it off.
Following the mingling and introductions, the event continued in the kitchen, where everyone enjoyed delicious wine and sushi, courtesy of Freelancer. The attending employers identified the students they connected with and wasted no time in initiating the interview process for both co-op and full-time positions. Remarkably, three students have already secured offers before even graduating! It’s evident that graduates find employment, companies find talented coders, and everyone emerges as a winner.
